According to a recent Forbes article, Colorado launched a startup business every 72 hours–particularly in Boulder and Denver. Both Boulder and Denver are “joining the list of developing tech hubs in the world.” The Forbes articles cites the Startup Report from Built In Denver wherein Colorado has launched 122 startups in 2012, raised over $502 million, and experienced 20 successful acquisitions.

According to Forbes, Colorado is seeing this business startup growth largely due to the the fact that Colorado (Denver particularly) is the number one location in the United States for people between 25 and 34. While both Denver and Boulder are attractive to young entrepreneurs because of the recreation and scenery–the capital is a major draw to those startups. 45% of the funding went to software companies and 33% to business-to-business (B2B) firms.

Interestingly, according to Forbes, Boulder was a particular hotspot for startups in 2012:

Despite the majority of capital raised going to Denver companies, when you look at the number of companies that raised over $1 million in the state last year, Boulder clocked in with 36, beating out Denver’s 33.

Erik Mitsek, CEO of The Colorado Technology Association, hopes that with the successful launches of startups last year, more entrepreneurs and venture capitalists will look to Colorado in the future.
